Humpback whales breaching: gorgeous, majestic, graceful, embodies all the strength and beauty of the ocean
Minke whales breaching: I will launch myself out of this ocean like a f***ing surface-to-air missile to seek and destroy my enemies
I remember an interview with a guy that did the camera work for nature documentaries and he said that baleen whales like these guys were the scariest things to shoot because “They’re the size of a train, they can suddenly appear out of nowhere in dark or murky water and they don’t make a goddamn sound. I was absolutely sure that one of them was going to hit me and well, ‘that’s all folks!’. Gave me a lot of perspective on how I handle myself when filming smaller animals now.”
Dear menstruating people: when you hit your forties you may notice that your eyesight gets blurry whenever it’s that time of the month. This is apparently normal – all the estrogen elasticizes your corneas. Of course perimenopause may also cause blurry vision for the opposite reason. Anyhow my point is: nobody ever told me this and I was mildly freaked out because I’ve never experienced it before.
My two other pieces of advice related to menses:
- if you bleed heavily and constantly that is NOT NORMAL no matter how many medical professionals brush you off. I got an IUD after nearly passing out from blood loss one particularly bad time and it’s changed my life after nearly twenty years of untreated menorrhagia.
- if you have really SUPER bad cramps that do not abate despite OTC painkillers/rest/heating pads, you probably have a burst appendix. Get thee to the ER instead of just ‘powering through it’ for three days
you had me until that last part, there are many reasons cramps/stomach or abdominal pain can be really bad other than a burst appendix including constipation.
the biggest difference between menstrual cramps and appendix pain is that menstrual cramps will grow and wane, i.e. come in “waves”. appendix pain is constant. it also tends to be localized to the lower right part of your abdomen while cramps can be spread out.
but yeah when in doubt see a doctor. there’s ways to help severe menstrual pain even if it’s “just” cramps.
